Im Baby-Name-Wizard (!) Blog berichtet Laura Wattenberg über die Androgynisierung von Vornamen und nennt „Cameron“ als Beispiel. War der Name noch vor einiger Zeit lediglich männlichen Babies vorbehalten, so ist er (oder die Abwandlungen Kamren, Camren, Kamryn oder Camryn) heute sowohl für Buben als auch für Mädchen akzeptiert. Einem ähnlichen Schicksal unterliegen auch Ashley und Ashton oder Leslie und Devin. Ganz besonders interessant wird es, wenn neue, geschlechtsneutrale Namen auftauchen. Wer wird diese Namen an sich reißen? Buben? Mädchen?

What crystal ball could have told you 15 years ago that Ashton would end up masculine and Addison feminine? In each case, the name’s fluid gender identity made it easy for a celebrity example to shape public perception. […] You can weigh risk factors, like whether the name contracts to a girlish or boyish sounding nickname. But in the end, if you choose a new androgynous name today you have to be prepared that 10 or 20 years down the line it may come across very differently.
