Die Insel Tristan da Cunha ist die isolierteste, bewohnte Insel der Welt. Sie liegt im Atlantik, der (aktive) Vulkan erstreckt sich mehr als 2.000 Meter hoch, und es gibt eine Siedlung, Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, die von 270 Einwohnern bewohnt wird.
Das Leben in der Siedlung scheint sehr ruhig zu sein. Auf die Frage, wie es sich anfühlt, in so einer kleinen Community zu leben, gibt ein Einwohner, der sein ganzes Leben auf der Insel verbracht hat, diese Antwort:
It’s a nice life […] Anyone on the island we’re calling brothers and sisters. […] We share and share alike. If they kill a oxen, they always slice it and give everybody some piece of beef, or mutton, or fish, anything. And, if anyone get in trouble, say, a roof of a house or… they’re here, they help you… And you can let the children go anywheres surround us. Anywheres. I mean anywheres.
We don’t bolt the door, we lock the door. When we go to the West, where our potatoe patches is, we leave our windows open on fine days. We leave our doors open. There’s no locks at all.
Einerseits klingt das sehr romantisch. Andererseits möchte ich auf dieser Insel keine Feinde haben oder in Ungnade fallen.
