Terminal ist 984,6× schneller als Archive Utility

Ein Mac-User hat gemessen, wie lange „Archive Utility“ (das ist das ZIP-Programm in macOS) benötigt, um 25 kleine GZ-Dateien zu extrahieren. Und danach, wie lange die gleiche Aktion durch einen Aufruf über die Kommandozeile (im Terminal: gzip -d -k *.gz) dauert.

Die Ergebnisse sind verrückt. Terminal ist 984,6 Mal schneller.

The end result is that users think they have a slow machine–„it took over 12 seconds to expand 25 tiny little archives!“–when what they really have is a horrendously slow GUI interface to a super fast task. Just how fast is the task, if the GUI doesn’t get in the way? […] it’s nearly instantaneous–press Return, and the files are expanded. Noch einmal, in eigenen Worten: Das Dekomprimieren von 25 GZ-Dateien dauert aufgrund des visuellen Feedbacks (denn ein echtes GUI ist das nicht) nahezu 13 Sekunden, während die gleiche Aktion über die Kommandozeile ausgeführt lediglich 13 Millisekunden benötigt.
