Facebook has been secretly paying people to install a “Facebook Research” VPN that lets the company suck in all of a user’s phone and web activity, similar to Facebook’s Onavo Protect app that Apple banned in June and that was removed in August. Facebook sidesteps the App Store and rewards teenagers and adults to download the Research app and give it root access to network traffic […] so the social network can decrypt and analyze their phone activity.
Wenn man sich durchliest, was da eigentlich passiert, was übertragen wird und wie die Facebook Research-App alle Schutzmechanismen, die das iOS-System mit sich bringt, umgeht, dann ist das Irrsinn. Aber ja, es gibt ein paar Dollar Entschädigung dafür.
John Gruber hat folgenden Schlusssatz in seinem Blogpost über die Facebook Research-App:
What apps you’re using, all of your network data, your location — Facebook takes all of it with this app. […] No regular developer would get away with this. […] I keep saying Facebook is a criminal enterprise, and I’m not exaggerating. Sometimes a bully needs to be punched in the face, not just told to knock it off.
Und ich bin da ganz seiner Meinung.
