Zugang zur Crypto-Wallet verloren

Das neue 404-Magazin berichtet über Prime Trust, ein gecrashtes Startup, das vor allem deshalb Insolvenz anmelden musste, weil – festhalten! – man das Passwort für eine Crypto-Wallet verloren hat und auch die Schlüssel zur Wiederherstellung – mittels Laser auf eine Stahlplatte geschrieben – irgendwie verschwunden sind.

In March of 2018, the Company created cold-storage wallets for purposes of maintaining cryptocurrency assets that included ETH, BTC, and ERC-20 compliant cryptocurrencies […] To enhance security, the Company set up the […] Wallet so that those who can ‘sign’ (i.e., approve) transactions would need to be in physical possession of hand-held Trezor or Ledger hardware devices […] If the wallet is lost, most users create “seed phrases” that serve as backup codes that allow people to get into the wallet virtually […] If a user loses both the hardware device and the seed phrases, it is virtually impossible for that user to regain access to the digital wallet.[…] Rather than write down the seed phrases, Prime Trust opted to laser etch them into a piece of steel […] According to the filing, it lost these devices, which is why it can’t get back into the wallet.

Ist das Inkompetenz? Steckt da System dahinter? Was passiert da eigentlich immer und immer wieder mit diesen Crypto-Festplatten, Crypto-Wallets, usw.? Und sucht der eine Typ, der vor Jahren mal eine Festplatte mit ein paar Bitcoins auf die Müllhalde geworfen hat, immer noch danach?

Was mich aber immer und immer wieder ins Staunen bringt: Wenn ich mir schon digitale Werte zulege oder schaffe, dann sichere ich die doch nach den üblichen Kriterien für eine Datensicherung ab? Das inkludiert Redundanz, die auf mehrere Standorte aufgeteilte Verwahrung von Daten und die sonst üblichen Vorkehrungen für eben solche Güter!

Aber ja. Ist halt so.

Ach ja, 404 Media sollte man im Auge behalten. Das Projekt wurde von ehemaligen Journalist:innen von Vices Motherboard gegründet und hat einen meiner Meinung nach unverkennbaren Ton, der es zum Vergnügen macht, die Artikel zu lesen. Ich war schon vom Intro-Artikel gehookt, aber bitte, überzeugt euch selbst. Hier ein Ausschnitt:
