We think the mission of Medium — to deepen people’s understanding of the world by helping to share the best ideas and best information — transcends mediums. To date, we’ve focused on article-length writing. It’s how our company got its name: as a home for medium-length writing on the internet.
By contrast, Mastodon is primarily for short-form writing of 500 characters or less. Not to be overly punny: Today we are extending what we do into the short-form medium (lowercase m) with an instance on Mastodon, me.dm.
Medium embraces Mastodon
Mastodon wächst gerade gesund, generisch, gratis und frei. Die Medium-Instanz ist Teil von Medium, also dem Abonnement, kostet daher etwas, was nicht unbedingt schlecht ist, denn früher oder später sind die Kosten für eine Instanz mit vielen Mitgliedern wohl nicht mehr mit freiwilligen Spenden zu begleichen.
I am very uncomfortable with the fact that nearly all Mastodon servers are free-to-use volunteer efforts, funded by voluntary donations. That’s not sustainable. I suspect a lot of Mastodon servers that seem to be thriving today won’t be around in 5 years, taking all of their posts with them. I don’t feel great about the fact that Medium is venture-backed, either, but they do charge $5/month or $50/year for a membership. I like paying for the services I use. Twitter is free to use and look how that’s gone.
