Omegle, die Website, die zwei Personen zufällig auswählt und miteinander per Video chatten lässt, was in einigen Fällen zu sehenswertem und kreativem Austausch geführt hat, in anderen aber die dunklen Seiten von Menschen ans Tageslicht gebracht, hat dicht gemacht. Der Gründer geht in einem Abschiedsbrief darauf ein, wie die Freiheit der Ungezwungenheit zum Problem wurde, was in weiterer Folge zum Abschalten des Service geführt hat. Omegle ist nicht mehr.
Omegle […] would randomly place you in a chat with someone else. These chats could be as long or as short as you chose. If you didn’t want to talk to a particular person, for whatever reason, you could simply end the chat and – if desired – move onto another chat with someone else. It was the idea of “meeting new people” distilled down to almost its platonic ideal. […] Virtually every tool can be used for good or for evil, and that is especially true of communication tools, due to their innate flexibility. The telephone can be used to wish your grandmother “happy birthday”, but it can also be used to call in a bomb threat. There can be no honest accounting of Omegle without acknowledging that some people misused it, including to commit unspeakably heinous crimes.

Auf 404 liefert Samantha Cole einen etwas differenzierteren Bericht über Omegle, in dem sie auf die vielen Gerichtsverfahren gegen die Plattform hinweist, die praktisch immer den sexuellen Missbrauch (von damals Minderjährigen) als Hauptargument für den Prozess anführen. Ist Omegle das Opfer seiner Userinnen und User geworden? Man weiß es nicht. Aber selbst im 404-Magazin liefert Samantha Cole einen Absatz, der die Sache zumindest unter einem Aspekt etwas relativiert.
Another lawsuit, filed on September 28 from a different sexual abuse victim, makes similar claims: That when the plaintiff was 11 years old in the fall of 2020, she was using Omegle and was paired with an adult man who coerced her into sending explicit images. Two years later, she claims, she was using Omegle again when she was paired with another man and groomed into sexual acts again.

Was eine Elf- bzw. Dreizehnjährige ohne Aufsicht bzw. Rücksprache mit den Eltern auf einer Plattform wie Omegle verloren hat, weiß ich nicht. Dass ein Richter, Omegle direkt in der Verantwortung und die Plattform nicht als Kommunikationsweg ansieht, sondern in ihrer Funktionalität quasi schuldiges Verhalten erkennt, ist bemerkenswert.
Omegle could have satisfied its alleged obligation … by designing its product differently — for example, by designing a product so that it did not match minors and adults […] What matters for purposes of those claims is that the warnings or design of the product at issue led to the interaction between an eleven-year-old girl and a sexual predator in his late thirties.

Dass es aber selbst im Jahr 2020, 21, 22 oder 23 noch immer nicht möglich zu sein scheint, Menschen unbeaufsichtigt miteinander chatten zu lassen ohne dass sich irgendein Creep oder sonst irgendein nerviges Element dort einnistet und für Unheil sorgt, ist… mühsam.
