It’s actually kind of amazing, because when you think about it, it’s: Russian oligarch starts unencrypted version of WhatsApp – clone, pixel-for-pixel clone of WhatsApp. That should be kind of a difficult brand to operate, and somehow they’ve done a really amazing job of convincing the whole world that this is an encrypted messaging app and that the founder is some kind of Russian dissident, even though he goes there once a month, the whole team lives there, their family’s there, whatever. Which I think is really amazing. And I mean, the deeper I go on this, I’m just: there’s something very weird going on here.

Und auf das Thema der Verhaftung Pavel Durovs in Frankreich angesprochen, antwortet Moxie Marlinspike mit einem Vergleich, was wohl passiert wäre, hätte Russland Pavel Durov verhaftet und wäre Telegram tatsächlich ein verschlüsselter Messenger.
To me, it’s very obvious that Russia would have had a much less polite version of that conversation with Pavlov and the Telegram team before this moment. So the fact that they’re still alive and their families are not in jail, and they’re able to operate, and they have access to all this data – to me, just… It would… It would be… It doesn’t make any sense that they’re not sharing that data with Russian gov.

Ich habe es hier immer und immer wieder schon erwähnt: Wenn sogar Kriminelle Telegram verlassen, dann ist der Messenger wohl nicht sicher. Wenn Kryptografie-Experten die Verschlüsselung infrage stellen, dann ist der Messenger wohl nicht sicher. Moxie Marlinspike selbst wundert sich auch schon lange.
